Holy Year of the Redemption

300,000 pilgrims

Pope John Paul II entrusts the WYD Cross to the Youth. First WYD in Southern Europe. This marked the first gathering, laying the foundation for World Youth Day.

WYD Cross and Icon of Our Lady

World Youth Day is accompanied by two symbols: the WYD Cross and the Icon of Our Lady. They go on pilgrimage, proclaiming the Gospel.

"I entrust to you the sign of this Jubilee Year: the Cross of Christ! Carry it throughout the world..."
— Leo XIV (1984)

The WYD Cross has visited 90 countries as a symbol of hope. Since 2003, the icon of the Blessed Virgin accompanies the WYD Cross on its pilgrimage.
